~.*.~
I want to talk to Melanie. I want to ask her about Jasper. Of course, I know she wonât answer, so I decide to call Georgia instead.
She answers on the second ring. âJune! Where are you?â
âIn Maryland.â
Thereâs a pause. âWhatâs in Maryland?â
I stand at the foot of the bed in Renâs parentsâ room. Slowly, I lower myself to sit on its edge and stare out the window. Itâs past midnight now. âI didnât know if youâd be up.â
I hear her snort. âOf course, Iâm up. Melanie had this partyââ
âJasperâs friends,â I blurt. âJasperâs friends are in Maryland.â
Another pause, this one long and agonizing. âSo⦠you guys havenât killed each other yet?â
Georgiaâs smart. She has a sixth sense when it comes to people, and she must understand that I have no idea how Iâm feeling right now. Yet, I know what I want to express, but how do I say it? How do I ask? I slouch forward and stare at my shoes. Then I notice that Iâve tracked mud into the room. Great. I switch my phone to the other ear, nervous.
âNo,â I say, finally. âWe havenât killed each other yet.
âI donât know if I like the sound of that.â
âHow does it sound?â I get up, my eyes roaming the room. I kick off my shoes and shove them under the bed.
âI donât know, but you donât sound happy.â
I sigh. âDo you remember the summer Melanie worked downtown? Near Quincy market.â
âYeah, I guess.â
âAnd she met that guy.â
âYeah. Some random kid she worked with. He was a grade above us or something.â
âDid you ever meet him or⦠did Melanie ever show you a picture of him?â
âJune, where are you going with this?â
There it is. I cross the room and grab the roll of paper towels. Renâs parents are wise for keeping some in their room. Instead of cleaning up the mud, though, I stare at the wall, paper towels clutched to my chest. âDid you?â
Pause. âNo.â She draws the word out. She sounds cautious.
I shove the towels onto the night table. âWhat happened to him?â
âI donât remember,â she responds. âJune, it was a long time ago. What does it matter?â
âI donât know,â I say honestly. âI met Jasperâs friends today. One of themâhe showed me a picture of Jasper and this girl. And the girl, Georgia. It was Melanie.â
âAre you sure?â Georgiaâs voice hardens, growing into a mixture of seriousness and skepticism. âYou know Melanie hates him.â
âIâm sure. He even called the girl in the picture Mel.â I pick up the towels again, then set them back down. How am I even going to clean up the mud with those anyway? But I canât sit down. I start pacing the room. âI wanted to ask Jasper about it, but the thing is⦠I know Jasper hates Melanie. It doesnât make sense.â
âYou havenât asked anyone about it?â
âMelanie wonât answer my calls, and Jasper⦠weâve finally come to a point where weâre not always fighting. I donât know how to ask.â
Thereâs another pause. âWell, something like this would definitely spice things up in our lives.
